This drainage improvement project in Deerfield, IL focused on improving water management around the original sump pump discharge point in the southwest area of the front yard. The project included installing a new French drain using perforated 4-inch PVC, drainage gravel, and landscape fabric, extending east from the existing discharge point. The surrounding low area was also restored using soil from the excavation and grass seed to create a smoother and more finished lawn surface.
Project Goals
- Improve drainage at the existing sump pump discharge location.
- Extend water management away from the original discharge point.
- Install a French drain using perforated 4-inch PVC.
- Incorporate drainage gravel and landscape fabric around the new drainage system.
- Provide a drainage termination point with a 4-inch T-fitting and gravel.
- Fill and improve the low area adjacent to the existing sump pump discharge.
- Restore the disturbed lawn area with grass seed.
French Drain Installation
The project began at the original sump pump discharge point located in the southwest area of the front yard. A French drain was installed extending approximately 25 linear feet eastward from the existing discharge location.
The new drainage system uses 4-inch perforated PVC, allowing water to enter the drainage pipe while providing a controlled path for subsurface water movement. The perforated piping was installed with drainage gravel and landscape fabric as part of the French drain assembly.
Drainage Gravel & Landscape Fabric
Landscape fabric was incorporated into the French drain installation to help separate the drainage materials from the surrounding soil. Drainage gravel was installed around the perforated PVC to support water movement into and through the drainage system.
Together, the fabric, gravel, and perforated PVC create a dedicated subsurface drainage area designed to improve water movement away from the original sump pump discharge point.
4-Inch T-Fitting Discharge
At the end of the approximately 25-foot drainage run, a 4-inch T-fitting was installed with additional drainage gravel.
The T-fitting provides a defined termination point for the French drain while the surrounding gravel supports water dispersal at the end of the system. This creates a practical endpoint for the new drainage installation while maintaining the overall appearance of the front yard.
Low Area Restoration
Excavated soil from the drainage installation was reused to address the existing low area next to the original sump pump discharge point.
The soil was placed and distributed to fill the low area and improve the surrounding grade. Once the area was prepared, grass seed was spread over the new soil to begin restoring the lawn and blend the repaired area into the existing front yard.
Lawn Restoration
Following the drainage installation and grading work, the disturbed area was finished with grass seed. This allows the lawn to gradually reestablish itself while providing a natural transition between the restored area and the existing turf.
Reusing soil from the excavation also helped minimize material disturbance and provided an efficient way to address the low area surrounding the original discharge point.
Why French Drain Systems Matter
French drains can provide an effective way to manage subsurface water by allowing water to enter a gravel-filled drainage area and move through perforated piping. This can be particularly useful around areas where water is concentrated or where an existing discharge point requires additional drainage capacity.
In this Deerfield property, the French drain extends the drainage area away from the original sump pump discharge point while the restored grade and seeded lawn help return the surrounding front yard to a finished appearance.
Project Highlights
- French drain installed in the southwest front yard.
- Approximately 25 linear feet of perforated 4-inch PVC installed.
- Drainage system extended east from the original sump pump discharge point.
- Landscape fabric incorporated into the French drain installation.
- Drainage gravel installed around the perforated PVC.
- 4-inch T-fitting installed at the end of the drainage run.
- Additional gravel provided at the end of the drainage system.
- Excavated soil reused to fill an existing low area.
- Low area next to the original sump pump discharge point regraded.
- Grass seed spread over the restored soil.
- Drainage improvements integrated into the existing front lawn.
As you browse through the photos, you can see how the drainage system was extended from the original sump pump discharge point and integrated into the front yard. The combination of perforated PVC, landscape fabric, and drainage gravel creates a dedicated French drain designed to improve subsurface water movement.
The completed project provides the Deerfield, IL property with an improved drainage solution while also addressing the low area near the original discharge point. Reusing excavated soil and reseeding the disturbed area helped restore the lawn and create a cleaner transition around the new drainage system.
