Backyard Concrete, Sod & River Rock Installation in Barrington

New Concrete Landing at Backyard Staircase

New concrete landing installed at the base of a backyard staircase as part of a residential landscape improvement project in Barrington, IL.

This backyard landscape improvement project in Barrington, IL combined concrete reconstruction, lawn restoration, and river rock installation to improve the area around the staircase and new deck. The project included removing a section of the existing backyard sidewalk, installing a new concrete section at the base of the staircase, restoring the disturbed lawn with soil and sod, and creating a finished river rock area beneath the new deck.

Project Goals

  • Remove and replace a section of the existing backyard sidewalk.
  • Install a new concrete section at the base of the staircase.
  • Restore the area where the existing sidewalk was removed with soil and sod.
  • Prepare the area beneath the new deck for a clean and low-maintenance finish.
  • Install landscape fabric and river rock beneath the deck.
  • Create a cohesive transition between the concrete, lawn, staircase, and deck areas.

Backyard Sidewalk Removal & Lawn Restoration

The project began with the removal of a designated section of the existing backyard sidewalk. The old concrete was removed and properly disposed of to prepare the area for the updated landscape design.

Following the sidewalk removal, the exposed area was filled and prepared with soil before installing new sod. This restored the lawn surface and created a smooth transition between the existing grass and the surrounding backyard areas.

New Concrete Staircase Landing

A new concrete section measuring approximately 3 feet by 4 feet was installed at the base of the backyard staircase. The new concrete provides a durable and functional landing area while creating a clean transition between the staircase and surrounding landscape.

The new concrete was designed to integrate with the existing backyard layout and provide a finished surface at the bottom of the stairs.

River Rock Installation Beneath the New Deck

The area beneath the new deck was prepared for a decorative and low-maintenance landscape finish. Landscape fabric was installed across the designated area to help separate the river rock from the underlying soil and reduce unwanted weed growth.

Approximately 3 to 4 yards of river rock were then installed over the landscape fabric. The river rock creates a clean, finished appearance beneath the deck while providing a practical ground-cover solution for an area that receives limited access and maintenance.

Landscape Integration

The combination of new concrete, restored sod, and river rock creates distinct but complementary areas throughout the backyard. The concrete landing provides a durable transition at the staircase, while the new sod restores the lawn where the sidewalk was removed.

Under the deck, the river rock establishes a defined landscape surface that complements the surrounding lawn and hardscape while giving the newly constructed deck area a more finished appearance.

Why Concrete & River Rock Improvements Matter

Well-planned backyard hardscape and landscape improvements can improve both the functionality and appearance of outdoor spaces. A properly constructed concrete landing provides a stable surface around high-traffic areas such as staircases, while sod restoration helps maintain a seamless lawn after construction work.

River rock is also a practical option for areas beneath decks and other structures where maintaining turf can be difficult. Combined with landscape fabric, it creates a durable ground-cover area that requires less ongoing maintenance while adding visual definition to the landscape.
