Drainage System and Retaining Wall Installation in Prospect Heights, IL

This project in Prospect Heights, IL combined a complete drainage system upgrade with a new retaining wall around the deck. The improvements were designed to better manage roof and sump pump runoff, reduce water accumulation near the foundation, and add structural definition around the existing patio and deck area.

Project Goals

• Improve surface and subsurface water management.

Drainage System Installation

The existing drainage system was replaced with a coordinated network combining French drains, perforated PVC, solid PVC piping, and tee discharge assemblies.

Install a French drain using 4-inch perforated PVC, landscape fabric, and river rock.
Connect the northwest downspout to the new underground drainage system.
Install approximately 102 linear feet of solid 4-inch PVC piping.
Install approximately 10 linear feet of perforated 4-inch PVC.
Direct collected water toward designated discharge locations.
Install tee discharge assemblies with grate covers for controlled water release and easier maintenance.

Dedicated Sump Pump Drainage

A separate drainage line was installed specifically for the home’s sump pumps.

Combine the primary and secondary sump pump discharge lines.
Install approximately 80 linear feet of solid 4-inch PVC piping.
Keep sump pump discharge independent from the roof drainage system.
Terminate the system with a tee discharge assembly and grate cover in the front yard.

Retaining Wall Installation

A new retaining wall was constructed around the base of the deck to provide a clean, finished edge and improve the definition of the existing patio area.

Construct approximately a 6′ x 20′ retaining wall.
Wall height approximately 9 inches.
Install Sandstone Brussels pavers.
Build the wall directly over the existing patio.
Create a durable transition between the deck and surrounding hardscape.

Lawn Restoration

Approximately 10 rolls of sod were installed to restore lawn areas disturbed during the drainage installation. The finished lawn provides a clean appearance and completes the project around the newly installed drainage system.
