This project in Park Ridge, IL focused on completely rebuilding the home’s front stairs to create a safer, more durable, and visually appealing entrance. The work included a reinforced concrete stair structure, brick facing matched to the home, natural flagstone on the stairs and landing, low-voltage lighting, and new aluminum railings to complete the updated entrance.
Project Goals
- Reconstruct the existing front stairs.
- Create a durable and structurally reinforced stair system.
- Match the new stair facing to the home’s exterior.
- Add natural flagstone to the stairs and landing.
- Improve nighttime visibility with low-voltage lighting.
- Add safe and attractive aluminum railings.
- Provide a clean, finished appearance at the front entrance.
Front Stair Reconstruction
The front stairs were rebuilt with a new reinforced structure designed for long-term stability and durability.
New footings were prepared, with rebar tied into the home’s foundation to provide additional structural support. Wire mesh reinforcement was installed before the concrete was poured to strengthen the stair structure.
Brick matching the home’s exterior was then installed on the face and walls of the stairs, creating a cohesive appearance with the existing architecture.
Flagstone Stair and Landing Installation
Natural flagstone was installed across the stair treads and landing to create a durable and attractive finished surface.
The combination of matching brick and natural flagstone provides the entrance with a classic hardscape appearance while creating a durable surface designed for everyday use.
Low-Voltage Stair Lighting
Low-voltage lighting was installed along the staircase, with two lights per stair, to improve visibility and safety during the evening.
The lighting also adds an architectural element to the newly reconstructed entrance and highlights the natural stone and brick finishes.
Aluminum Railing Installation
Two aluminum railings were installed along the front stairs to provide additional support and safety.
The new railings complement the reconstructed stairs while creating a finished and functional entrance.
Final Stair Finishing
Once construction was completed, the new stairs were professionally power washed to clean the surfaces and complete the installation.
An additional step could also be incorporated into the design if required based on the final site conditions.
Why Front Stair Reconstruction Matters
Front stairs are one of the most frequently used areas of a home and must provide both safety and long-term durability.
A properly reinforced structure, quality hardscape materials, appropriate lighting, and secure railings can improve the functionality of the entrance while also enhancing the property’s curb appeal.
