This project in Chicago, IL combined underground drainage improvements with the construction of a new stone retaining wall to improve water management, stabilize the landscape, and enhance the property’s appearance. The work included replacing an outdated drainage system with solid PVC piping while installing a new two-tier retaining wall to provide both structural support and visual appeal.
Project Goals
- Improve roof runoff management.
- Replace the existing drainage system.
- Direct water away from the home’s foundation.
- Stabilize the landscape with a retaining wall.
- Improve long-term drainage performance.
- Enhance the property’s curb appeal.
- Underground Drainage System
The existing poly drainage pipe connected to the home’s downspouts was removed and replaced with a new underground solid PVC drainage system.
Decorative river rock beneath the deck was carefully relocated to allow for installation and reinstalled once the work was complete, minimizing disruption to the existing landscape.
The new PVC piping was installed beneath the deck using the existing landscape fabric whenever possible before extending the system toward designated discharge locations.
Exterior downspouts were connected to the new drainage network, and all piping was installed below grade with proper pitch to encourage efficient water flow.
Surface-access tee discharge assemblies with protective grates and gravel bases were installed at each outlet to improve maintenance accessibility and promote controlled water dispersal.
Any lawn areas disturbed during construction were restored upon completion.
Stone Retaining Wall Installation
To improve grade stability and complement the landscape, a new two-tier stone retaining wall was constructed.
The installation began with excavation and preparation of the wall location before a compacted gravel base was installed to provide long-term structural support.
The lower retaining wall was built with a graceful curved design measuring approximately nine feet in length, while the upper retaining wall extended approximately five feet, creating a clean, layered appearance that blends naturally with the surrounding landscape.
Why Drainage and Retaining Walls Work Together
Proper drainage and retaining walls often work hand in hand to protect a property’s landscape.
Underground drainage systems help move roof runoff away from the home, while retaining walls stabilize changes in elevation, reduce erosion, and create a more functional outdoor space.
Together, these improvements provide long-term performance while enhancing both the beauty and functionality of the property.
