Brick Paver Walkways & Landscape Planting Project in Deerfield, IL

New brick paver walkway connecting the back gate toward a detached garage at a Deerfield, IL property.

New brick paver walkway connecting the back gate toward a detached garage at a Deerfield, IL property.

This Deerfield, IL landscape project combined new brick paver walkways with a comprehensive landscape planting installation along the property’s fence lines and corner planting area. The hardscape work created defined pedestrian paths between the back gate, detached garage, Broadway sidewalk, and side entrance using a herringbone paver pattern. The landscape portion added a layered selection of hostas, ornamental grasses, hydrangea, creeping phlox, weigela, heuchera, and rudbeckia, finished with shredded mulch throughout the new planting areas.

Project Goals

  • Install approximately 80 square feet of brick pavers between the back gate and detached garage door.
  • Create an approximately 51-square-foot paver walkway from the Broadway sidewalk to the side entrance.
  • Use a herringbone paver pattern with a Belden Regimental full range or Endicott three-color blend.
  • Excavate and prepare the walkway areas with a compacted base.
  • Install paver edging secured with 10-inch nails.
  • Sweep joint sand between the installed pavers.
  • Establish new planting areas along the outer and inside fence lines.
  • Create a corner planting area with hydrangea and creeping phlox.
  • Install approximately 1 cubic yard of shredded mulch throughout the new planting areas and raised bed.

Back Gate to Detached Garage Walkway

The first hardscape area connects the back gate toward the detached garage door. Approximately 80 square feet of pavers were planned for this walkway, consisting of approximately 70 linear feet at 2 feet wide with two flared ends.

The walkway creates a defined pedestrian route through the property while providing a durable hardscape connection between the back gate and garage area.

Broadway Sidewalk to Side Entrance

A second paver walkway was installed between the Broadway sidewalk and the home’s side entrance. This section covers approximately 51 square feet and creates a clearly defined connection from the sidewalk toward the property.

Together, the two walkway sections establish consistent pedestrian access through different areas of the property.

Paver Pattern & Design

The paver installation uses a herringbone pattern with the specified material options of Belden Regimental full range or an Endicott three-color blend. The pattern provides a structured layout while the blended color selection adds visual variation throughout the walkways.

The pavers were installed after excavation and base preparation, followed by edging installation and joint sand placement.

Paver Base Preparation & Installation

The designated walkway areas were excavated before the installation of the compacted base. The base was specified to be approximately 8–10 inches, using appropriate materials such as soil, CA-6 gravel, 3/4-inch crushed limestone, and sand.

Once the base was prepared and compacted, the pavers were laid according to the selected herringbone pattern. Edging was then installed and secured with 10-inch nails to help define the perimeter of each walkway.

Joint sand was swept between the pavers after installation to fill the spaces between the individual units.

Outer Fence Line Planting

The landscape installation included a new planting area along the outer fence line featuring a combination of ornamental grasses and foliage plants.

The planting plan included 26 Etched Glass Hostas or equivalent plants along with seven Karl Foerster grasses. The combination provides varied foliage and vertical structure along the fence line.

Corner Planting Area

A dedicated corner planting area was designed with a combination of flowering and groundcover plants. One Annabelle Hydrangea was included as a focal plant, complemented by five Emerald Blue Creeping Phlox.

The combination provides a mixture of height, flowering interest, and lower-growing coverage within the corner planting area.

Inside Fence Line Planting

Additional planting was installed along the inside fence line using a layered combination of flowering plants and foliage.

The planting plan included three Spilled Wine Weigelas, 15 Green Spice Heuchera or equivalent plants, and 12 Glitters Like Gold Rudbeckia. These selections provide a mixture of foliage textures, plant heights, and seasonal flowering interest.

Mulch Installation

Approximately 1 cubic yard of shredded mulch was spread throughout the new planting areas and raised bed. The mulch provides a finished surface around the new plantings while helping define the individual landscape beds.

The completed mulch installation also creates a consistent visual connection between the different planting areas throughout the property.

Why Paver Walkways & Layered Plantings Matter

Defined paver walkways provide durable pedestrian connections while giving the landscape a structured layout. A consistent pattern and edging help establish clear boundaries between the hardscape and surrounding planting areas.

Layered planting designs can add different heights, textures, foliage characteristics, and seasonal color along fences and around key landscape areas. Combining the plantings with finished mulch creates a cohesive landscape appearance around the new walkways.
