The entrance to a community is one of the first things residents and visitors notice. When major structural elements begin to fail, the solution often requires much more than a simple repair. This project focused on rebuilding a deteriorated retaining wall supporting the community entrance while preserving the existing stone signage and landscape features.
Project Goals
- Rebuild the failing retaining wall supporting the entrance feature.
- Preserve and reinstall the existing stone signage.
- Improve structural stability and long-term performance.
- Incorporate proper drainage and reinforcement systems.
- Protect the entrance feature from future damage.
- Retaining Wall Demolition and Base Reconstruction
- Approximately 50 linear feet of retaining wall was removed to allow for complete reconstruction of the supporting structure.
Work completed included:
- Removal of the existing retaining wall.
- Excavation of the existing base materials.
- Installation of a new 6-inch concrete foundation.
- Preparation for long-term wall stability.
- Reconstruction of the wall system.
- Stone Signage Preservation and Reinstallation
- The large stone entrance signage and surrounding outcropping stones were carefully removed, protected, and reinstalled after reconstruction.
Improvements included:
- Protection and temporary support of existing stone signage.
- Removal and reinstallation of existing outcropping stone.
- Preservation of the character of the entrance feature.
- Reinstallation of the community entrance monument.
- Structural Reinforcement and Drainage Improvements
- A retaining wall is only as strong as the systems behind it. Proper reinforcement and drainage help reduce pressure and improve long-term performance.
Drainage and reinforcement improvements included:
- Installation of geogrid reinforcement within the wall system.
- Reconstruction of drainage features behind the wall.
- Installation of drainage stone to relieve hydrostatic pressure.
- Improved water management behind the retaining wall.
- Enhanced structural support and stability.
- Decorative Stone and Concrete Improvements
- Additional improvements were made to restore surrounding features and complement the rebuilt entrance.
Work included:
- Installation of decorative Butterfield Flowers stone.
- Reconstruction of adjacent concrete areas.
- Restoration of hardscape elements surrounding the wall.
- Improved appearance and functionality of the entrance.
- Lighting and Protective Features
- To complete the project, existing landscape lighting was restored and protective measures were added.
Improvements included:
- Reinstallation of existing landscape lighting.
- Installation of steel bollards near the driveway entrance.
- Protection of the wall and stone signage from future vehicle impacts.
- Enhanced safety and visibility.
Why Retaining Wall Foundations Matter
Retaining walls rely on more than what is visible above ground. The concrete foundation, drainage systems, reinforcement materials, and structural support components all play a critical role in long-term stability and performance.
- Benefits of proper retaining wall construction include:
- Improved structural integrity.
- Better drainage behind the wall.
- Reduced pressure and movement.
- Long-term durability.
- Preservation of important entrance features.
- Enhanced curb appeal and community appearance.
