French Drain and Drainage Swale Installation in Lake Zurich

Residential drainage project in Lake Zurich, IL showing French drain installation, underground PVC piping, catch basin placement, and backyard grading improvements for effective water control.

Successful drainage projects depend on multiple systems working together. Rather than addressing a single wet spot, this project focused on creating a complete drainage solution designed to collect, direct, and discha

rge water efficiently throughout the property.

Project Goals

  • Improve backyard drainage and water management.
  • Reduce standing water and soil saturation.
  • Create a clear path for water movement across the property.
  • Restore lawn areas affected by drainage issues.
  • Improve the functionality and usability of the backyard.
  • Drainage Swale Construction

To help manage surface runoff, a new drainage swale was constructed across the backyard.

Benefits of the swale included:

  • Directing surface water away from low areas.
  • Improving water flow throughout the property.
  • Reducing water accumulation during heavy rainfall.
  • Supporting the performance of the overall drainage system.
  • French Drain Installation

A French drain system was installed and connected to an existing clay tile drainage system to improve subsurface water management.

Drainage improvements included:

  • French drain installation.
  • Connection to existing clay tile drainage.
  • Collection and movement of groundwater.
  • Reduction of soil saturation in problem areas.
  • Improved long-term drainage performance.
  • Catch Basin Installation

A catch basin was installed at the property’s low point to collect and manage water before discharge.

Catch basin benefits included:

  • Collection of concentrated runoff.
  • Improved water control during heavy rain events.
  • Prevention of water pooling in low-lying areas.
  • Enhanced efficiency of the drainage system.
  • Storm Drain Connection

To complete the drainage pathway, the system was extended beyond the catch basin and connected to an existing storm drain using solid PVC piping.

System components included:

  • Solid PVC drainage pipe installation.
  • Extension of the drainage network.
  • Connection to an existing storm sewer system.
  • Reliable discharge point for collected water.
  • Improved overall drainage effectiveness.
  • Why Complete Drainage Systems Matter

Every component of a drainage system serves a specific purpose:

  • The drainage swale directs water.
  • The French drain intercepts water below the surface.
  • The catch basin collects water at key locations.
  • The storm drain connection provides a discharge point.

When these components work to

gether, the result is a more effective and reliable drainage solution designed to protect the property over the long term.

Grading and Landscape Restoration

Following the drainage installation, the property was restored and improved to ensure a finished appearance and continued usability.

Restoration work included:

  • Grading corrections throughout the project area.
  • Lawn restoration using approximately 45 rolls of sod.
  • Surface smoothing and final grading.
  • Preparation of a new family playground area.
  • Fresh mulch installation within the play space.
  • Project Highlights
  • Backyard drainage improvement.
  • Drainage swale construction.
  • French drain installation.
  • Catch basin installation.
  • Storm drain connection.
  • Solid PVC drainage piping.
  • Clay tile drainage integration.
  • Lawn restoration and sod installation.
  • Grading and water management solutions.
  • Playground area preparation and mulch installation.

As you browse through the photos, you’ll see the drainage swale construction, French drain installation, catch basin placement, storm drain connection, grading work, sod installation, and final restoration that transformed the backyard.
