Driveway, Walkway, and Patio Hardscape Restoration Project in Glencoe

A successful hardscape project is not always about complete replacement. Sometimes the best solution is identifying which areas need to be rebuilt, repaired, or refreshed to improve both appearance and long-term performance. This project focused on restoring multiple hardscape features throughout the property while creating a stronger foundation for years of use.

Project Goals

• Replace the existing driveway and walkway with a durable paver system.
• Rebuild and strengthen the hardscape base where necessary.
• Restore the appearance and functionality of the backyard patio.
• Correct settlement and low areas.
• Create an attractive landscape focal point.
• Extend the lifespan of existing hardscape features.

Driveway and Walkway Replacement

The existing driveway and walkway were removed and replaced with new Unilock Brussels Block pavers installed over a rebuilt base.

Work included:

• Removal of the existing driveway and walkway.
• Correction and rebuilding of the sub-base.
• Installation of new limestone screening.
• Installation of Unilock Brussels Block pavers.
• Creation of a clean, durable finished surface.
• Improved long-term hardscape performance.

Base Reconstruction and Preparation

The performance of any paver installation depends on the foundation beneath it. Proper preparation helps prevent settling and improves the longevity of the hardscape.

Preparation work included:

• Evaluation of existing base conditions.
• Correction of sub-base deficiencies.
• Rebuilding of areas requiring additional support.
• Installation of proper base materials.
• Surface preparation for new paver installation.

Patio Repairs and Restoration

Rather than replacing the patio, targeted repairs were completed to improve stability and appearance while extending its useful life.

Patio improvements included:

• Resecuring existing patio edging.
• Correction of low and settled areas.
• Patio leveling adjustments.
• Improved patio stability.

• Restoration of the existing hardscape surface.

To refresh the appearance of the patio and strengthen the paver system, cleaning and joint restoration were completed.

Restoration work included:

• Power washing of the patio surface.
• Removal of debris and buildup from paver joints.
• Installation of new polymeric joint sand.
• Improved paver interlock and stability.
• Enhanced appearance and reduced weed growth potential.

Decorative Tree Ring Installation

One of the unique features of this project was the installation of a decorative paver tree ring at the front of the property.

Improvements included:

• Installation of a decorative paver border around the existing tree.
• Addition of soil within the new planting area.
• Creation of a landscape focal point.
• Improved integration between landscape and hardscape elements.

Why Hardscape Restoration Matters

A hardscape is only as strong as the base beneath it. Rebuilding foundations where necessary, correcting low areas, reinforcing edging, and restoring joint sand all help improve both appearance and performance.

Benefits include:

• Improved durability and stability.
• Reduced settling and movement.
• Better long-term performance.
• Enhanced curb appeal.
• Extended lifespan of existing hardscape features.
